Years ago, when my children were young and experienced the wonderful highs and unfortunate lows, I started asking them to find their 5.

I wasn't asking for a grade or a score. I was asking them to pause just for a moment and locate themselves on a 1-to-10 Life Scale that represents the full range of human emotional experience. One is the Crisis Zone and ten is the Euphoric Zone. Five is balance: grounded, clear, capable. This prompt, for my children and the concept of Find Your 5, is to bring awareness of where you individually land at that moment, or for any period. A small question is designed to initiate the Find Your 5 Cycle: What's your number?

It sounds simple. That's exactly the point.

Why a Scale?

Most of us were never given language for our inner experience. We were told to "calm down," "toughen up," or "look on the bright side" without anyone ever showing us how. The result is that many people spend their lives swinging between emotional extremes without understanding having a strategy or a process to bring them to their center – their 5.

The 1-10 Life Scale changes that. It gives you something concrete to hold onto in moments when everything feels abstract and uncontrollable. When you can name your number, you can start to work with it.

What the Numbers Mean

Think of the scale like a thermometer for your emotional state, not designed to judge yourself, but to understand yourself.

At 9 or 10, Euphoric Zone. An intense or extreme feeling of excitement, joy, accomplishment, or recognition can place your nervous system in overdrive. Thinking clearly can be difficult when everything seems tinted through rose-colored glasses.

At 1 or 2, Crisis or Despondent Zone. You may experience extended discouragement with a sense of heaviness or perspective loss. Feeling numb, withdrawn, or deeply low. This is the other extreme, a flatness that can be challenging, overwhelming, or just quieter. Small things feel enormous. Your body may be tense, your breathing shallow. This is your system saying: I need help right now.

At a 5, you're in balance. You can think. You can listen. You can respond rather than react. You can see the path forward with clarity.

The goal of Find Your 5 is not to live at a permanent artificial calm or in a euphoric state. Life brings joy that pushes us to 8 and grief that drops us to 2. The goal is to start the Find Your 5 Cycle, identify where you are currently, and to know the next steps to return to your center.

Awareness Before Action

Here's what I've learned after three decades of working with students, educators, and families: most harm in relationships, in decisions, in the classroom, home, and work happens when people are far from their 5 and don't realize it.

When you know your number, something shifts. You get a moment of honest self-awareness before you react. That moment is everything.

Try it right now. Without judgment, where are you on the scale? Not where you think you should be, but where you actually are while standing in your lived experiences?

What's your number? This question alone is a step toward your ability to Find Your 5.
